      7. FAQ
          7.1. General
7.1.2. FAQ : Method to use WIT

Abstract : You must work first on the idea organization, then on their content, the keywords, and finally on presentation structure and style.

At any time during the process, you may generate the current state of the web site.

Web site creation methodology

Basic steps

- 1. First, organize the space where you will work :

  • create a sub directory of the "Projects" WIT directory (for instance) : it will be your current project directory,
  • in this directory, you may create "images" and "documents" sub directories, in which you will store the images and documents you will use in your site.
  • create a new document wit WIT and save it in your project directory.
  • optional : set the work directory _WORKDIR _ environment variable to your project folder (see the document options to do this.)

- 2. Writing Phase : concentrate on what you mean :

  • create the outline : create / organize your ideas (with WIT),
  • type (or paste) some text in your ideas,
  • read your writing, correct eventual mistakes : you may use the preview window for a comfortable reading.

- 3. Production phase :

  • choose a structure template (or modify current template (expert mode)). Check that the page elements you want are activated in the template.
  • choose a style template or modify it.
  • generate the web site in a specific production directory, not in your project directory.
  • visualize the site.

Optional steps

- 4. Illustration and external references phase. Associate :

  • images,
  • documents
  • or URLs.

- 5. Internal references definition phase : create idea associations (internal links).

- 6. Bibliographic references definition phase :

  • Use the book manager to create books
  • If you have many books, consider importing them with the import function (use F1 help).
  • Sweep ideas and determine those which will have references to books.
  • In idea properties, add references to books.

- 7. Keyword definition phase (I recommend the manual method, more accurate) :

  • For each idea, display its properties and activate the keyword manager.
  • At the beginning, the keyword list is empty :
    • create the keywords you need
    • think about the consistency of these words (for example, names only, or verbs ony)
  • Add pertinent keywords to the current idea.

- 8. Custom fields definition phase :

  • If you defined custom fields (options menu), you may give them values.

The optional steps can be done, in two manners :

  • For each step, sweep all ideas,
  • or for each idea, apply all steps by following the idea properties dialog tabs.

Other useful WIT functions.

To help you to know the progress of your work, you can enlarge the treeview (and set it to display more fields in the options menu) : you now have statistics about each idea : keywords number, associations, references numbers, etc... This is useful to detect where you are in the steps above.

WIT also produces a report on used resources (images, documents, or URLs) : this function is available in the "File" menu. It displays a list of images, documents, and URLs that are used in your WebSite : you just have to double click on an element to have the list of all ideas that use it (cross references).
